Coach Terry Battenberg presented a special clinic last April for coaches in the Northern California area on "Teaching the Fast Break and Use of the Post Man." Ninety-seven (97) coaches attended the three hour clinic that featured diagramming, video, and then on-court demonstration of the drills and skills Battenberg has used during his 31 year coaching career.
Basketball is a game of luck, and it is bad luck
when you don't have a good Post Man.

Post Play and Big Man Development
Coach Battenberg has spent many years working with coaches and players on
the development of Post Play and the Inside Game. His latest book, Power Post Play, is available through this site (see Books above) and you can contact him personally at Sacramento State University or through this website (Contact Coach Battenberg) for more information.
Coaches' Post Man Tip of the Week #3:
A good way to teach perimeter players to look into and pass into the post player is to make specific drills for this goal. During half court offensive work, require perimeter players to pass the ball into the post before anyone can take a shot. The post is allowed to score if he has a good shot, but he should pass it back out to a perimeter player, if he is not able to get a good shot. Perimeter players can use this opportunity to cut to the basket, relocate for an outside shot, or move and fill an open space. This drill will teach the posts and perimeter players to work together for a good shot attempt.

SEPTEMBER TIP OF THE MONTH
Conditioning Fall Conditioning
While distance running will give a basketball player a solid base for the rigors of October/November Try-outs, coaches and players alike
need to remember that basketball is a sprinting game. Fast breaks, defensive transition, quick cuts on the half court, and explosive
moves need to be conditioned for too. Be sure to incorporate some middle and shorter runs/sprints into the workouts. Gradually shorten
the distance and increase the effort as you near the beginning of try-outs. And don't forget jumping, strength conditioning, and individual
skill improvement in the conditioning program. The best way to condition for basketball is to do as many basketball related drills and skills as possible.
Big men, don't forget The Daily Four: Mikan Drill, Tipping, Put-backs, and Free Throws. For more information on pre-season conditioning,
see Player Development on this site and/or check out my latest book, Power Post Play.
